DfAI: The missing piece of artificial intelligence engineering
Considering how quickly engineering design and manufacturing have advanced alongside computational developments, it may surprise you that very few engineers are trained in both engineering system design and artificial intelligence. There are countless opportunities for breakthrough improvements in how we develop new technology using AI in engineering design, but to succeed in these challenging areas, engineers must understand a new speciality--Design for Artificial Intelligence. Chris McComb, Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon, and his student Glen Williams, now Principal Scientist at Re:Build Manufacturing, have developed a Design for Artificial Intelligence (DfAI) framework in collaboration with researchers at Penn State University to educate and encourage the academic and industrial engineering community to adopt AI engineering design. "Most of the time, we view AI as a tool to add onto an existing system, but to develop better systems we need to integrate AI into the engineering design process from the very beginning," McComb explains. A core challenge is motivating institutions to make investments in the long-term potential of AI technologies.

A successful career start with a degree in artificial intelligence
Artificial intelligence is increasingly shaping our daily lives, changing the economy and making its way into the private sphere. For the winter semester 2022/23, the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU) is establishing new degree programmes for all those who want to actively participate in this fascinating development. Autonomous driving, facial recognition or the metaverse, which links the real with virtual worlds, are inconceivable without artificial intelligence (AI) and the technology required for it (KIT). "Experts in AI and AI technology are increasingly in demand. But to reach expert level, you need to master a truly interdisciplinary combination of skills and knowledge from computer science, mathematics, ethics and psychology, to name just a few areas," says Prof. Dr. Douglas Cunningham, who recognised the need for specially trained personnel and helped develop the four new degree programmes.

Do You Want To Be An Artificial Intelligence Engineer? Here's A Checklist
Artificial intelligence is a disruptive technology that is enabling technological revolutions in its initial stages. In simpler terms, AI is any behavior or activity portrayed by machines and systems. AI has self-learning attributes which means whenever an AI-powered machine receives new information, it can make corrections on its own to make sure it doesn't repeat old errors. This property allows AI systems to perform tasks that require human intelligence and human understanding like visual perception, speech recognition, decision making, etc. According to research done by Gartner, artificial intelligence will create a business value of $3.9 trillion by 2022.
